Workers Continue to Strike Across Iran

By INU Staff

INU - For the second consecutive day, rail workers in Iran have been blocking tracks in protest over the non-payment of their wages for a number of months. Workers have been blocking the tracks that link the town of Bandar Abbas to Tehran.

According to the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA), they have not received their wages for three months.

Meanwhile, another rail worker strike was reported in Shazand on Tuesday. They were also protesting the non-payment of two months of wages.

Rail workers in Rafsanjan, Ahmadabad and Sirjan in southern Iran have been striking because their wages have not been paid on time. Media outlets reported the rail workers as saying the situation has put them in a precarious financial situation. It was also reported that the situation has got worse since the operation of the railways was passed over to the private sector earlier this year.

Also striking because of the delayed payment of their salaries were workers in the city of Ahvaz in the province of Khuzestan.

The labour conditions in Iran are terrible and the people are disgraced by the government’s complete lack of attention to the situation. Already the level of unemployment in the country is forcing more and more people into absolute poverty, but now a growing number of workers are being pushed into the same category.

Labour activists and workers across the country have been participating in strikes and protests because of the urgency of the situation.

Last month, production stopped in the Damash water company’s factory because of the company’s failure to supply the resources needed to produce the product, prompting workers to go on strike. The original owners of the company were unable to pay the huge debts that were owed, so it was taken from the private sector and given to Bank Melli Iran.

Over the past few months alone, there have been dozens of gatherings as workers become more and more concerned about their personal situations.

The country has experienced extremely high levels of inflation and the national currency – the rial – has lost a significant portion of its value. Much of this is because of the sanctions imposed by the United States. However, such widespread corruption and disgraceful mismanagement have caused so much damage to the economy over the years.

The people of Iran have always been neglected by the cruel regime, and they are the ones that are suffering the most. As their wages stay the same, they continue to be confronted with ever-increasing prices of goods. The average Iranian is able to afford less and less and more and more workers are facing salary payment delays.

All the while, regime officials are continuing to line their own pockets at the expense of the country’s citizens.

This is one of the reasons why regime change is absolutely essential. The people are fed up with the corruption, mismanagement, belligerence and recklessness of the regime. They want the regime to collapse to open the way for freedom, democracy and peace.
