Insider news & Analysis in Iran
Iran economic crisis

Political sociology teaches us that an untreatable crisis is looming when you see ordinary people express their grievances and demand change while government officials are unable to respond. In this regard, the news and reports coming out of Iran all hint that the country is faced with such a situation.

Iran’s economic gift to the society

In fact, the 40-year rule of a corrupt system in Iran has yielded nothing but inflation, recession, poverty, etc. The systematic corruption of the Iranian officials and government institutions has widened the gap between the deprived and poor strata and the rulers.

You don’t need to be an expert or have a Ph.D. in political sociology to take note of what is going in Iran. A quick glance at the political conditions in Iran immediately shows that all economic, social, and cultural subjects are tied to the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his subsets, including the office of the Supreme Leader, the economic empire of Astan Quds Razavi Charity, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its proxies inside Iran and abroad, state-run media, etc.

The decline of the national currency

The stability and credibility of national currency count as a vital parameter in the economic success of any country. But before the Iranian people lose their confidence in national currency, government officials admitted to the free fall of the value of the rial by lopping four zeros.

It’s worth noting that one of the effects of the currency losing its credibility is the scrapping of coins and coinage. On September 29, Abdolnaser Hemmati, the chairman of the central bank of Iran, said in a public session: “Issuing of 5,000-rial coins costs 8,000 rials!”

The rising poverty line

According to the latest report by the Iranian parliament research center, the poverty line for a family of four has grown about 300,000 tomans (3 million rials) in just three seasons. Since systematic corruption has left no place for the middle class, ordinary people are the victims of mismanagement and the country’s financial decadence.

But, ironically, while the people struggle to make ends meet, Iran’s government continues to make generous contributions to terrorist groups affiliated with the terrorist-designated IRGC Quds Force, such as the Lebanese Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthis, Iraqi Shiite Militias. Tehran is also constantly providing the Syrian Government financial and military support against its own people.

Where are developments going?

When the government's priorities are not associated to cure and find a solution for the horrible living conditions of the people, and when it responds to the demands of various strata of society for basic rights and arrears with negligence and hollow promises or suppression, then it’s natural to expect more protests and uprisings for a fundamental change such as what we witnessed in 2018 when financial and economic grievances sparked anti-government protests across Iran.
